Rumi: Ancient Wisdom To Inspire Your Soul

When you wake up in the morning, do you feel happy, free and able to fulfil your true potential? Drawing on some beautiful yet powerful poetry from Rumi, a Persian poet, Islamic scholar, theologian, mystic and spiritual teacher may give you inspiration.
Despite being written back in the 13th Century, his wisdom, insight and unique perspective of the Universe still seems equally relevant today.
Here are some of my favourite life lessons from Rumi, about inner self, inspiration, love, happiness, living life to the full and living from your heart. I hope these quotes resonate with you too!

Lesson 1: You have enormous potential - you have the whole universe inside of you!
We are all interconnected and inseparable - and have the potential for amazing thoughts, beliefs, visions and dreams. We all strive for a state of peace, happiness, awareness, creativity, love, compassion, equanimity and empathy - but these things can be blocked by fear, and this stems from not feeling connected. Don't set limits on what you can do. Chase those dreams and open up to new possibilities.
"We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust."
- Rumi

“Everything from the Universe is within you. Ask all from yourself.”
“Become the sky. Take an axe to the prison wall. Escape.”
"You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop."
- Rumi
Lesson 2: If you focus on changing yourself, the whole world will then appear differently to you.
You are the creator of your own world and the author of your destiny. You are the source of all your experiences. You have control over your thoughts, emotions, feelings or perceptions, and do not have to succumb to your automatic conditioned reflexes and responses that can be triggered by other people and circumstances. Notice the way way you react - and then make a conscious choice to change your reaction.

If you notice the same repeating patterns – observe your body senstations, your thoughts, your emotions and the images that you create in your mind - and look at your perceptions and the story you build around that experience. Then you can break the habit of repeating that story.
“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself."
"Life is a balance between holding on and letting go."
"Yesterday is gone and it's tale told. Today new seeds are growing."
- Rumi
Lesson 3: Understand that you are not your thoughts.
Negative chatter in your mind may not even be your own thoughts – it can be centuries of conditioned thoughts that are recycled through you. This prison can be self-imposed and enforced by culture, parents, relgion, upbringing and economics. You have the choice to go beyond this conditioning and stop worrying about how others might perceive you. Don’t take ownership of these thoughts. Let them flow through you and don't be victimised by them.

“Be empty of worrying. Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?”
“Put your thoughts to sleep, do not let them cast a shadow over the moon of your heart. Let go of thinking.”
- Rumi
Lesson 4: Follow your heart - it will lead you to where you should be in life. Live and Love with your heart.
You have the choice to choose love or fear in any moment, and this determines your experience of life. Don't let fear keep you trapped. When you view the present moment through the filter of the past you become closed off to the magic that lies in front of you.

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.”
“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river of joy within you.”
"Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction."
“Only from the heart can you touch the sky.”
"Be foolishly in love, because love is all there is."
"All doubt, despair and fear become insignificant when the intention of life becomes love."
- Rumi
Lesson 5: Spend time with people who bring out the best in you.
Live passionately and you will be drawn to other souls that support your personal and collective evolution.

"Respond to every call that excites your spirit."
“Ignore those that make you fearful and sad, that degrade you back towards disease and death.”
- Rumi
Lesson 6: Look inside yourself rather than outside - the answers are in your heart.

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”
“That which is false troubles the heart, but truth brings joyous tranquility.”
- Rumi
Lesson 7: Don’t avoid difficult experiences - use them as an opportunity to learn and grow.
Making changes in life or seeking help can be a difficult and challenging process - but if can also be highly rewarding and can also give you the opportunity to fulfil your true potential.

“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”
“These pains you feel are messengers. Listen to them.”
“You have to keep breaking your heart until it opens.”
“The moon stays bright when it doesn’t avoid the night.”
