Hypnotherapy: FAQs

How does hypnotherapy work?

During the session, I take you into a deeply relaxed state with heightened suggestibility.

The human mind operates on two levels: the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind reasons, analyses, makes decisions, and files all incoming information in the brain’s memory bank. The subconscious mind, however, works in the background. It keeps all of your organs and bodily processes functioning without you having to consciously think about it, but also controls habits, emotions and other behavioural patterns.

In ordinary, everyday activities, your conscious mind is dominant. You make decisions, think, and analyse incoming information from your five senses with it. Once this information is analysed, it is then stored in the memory bank for future use.

The subconscious reads this information, and then creates physiological, emotional and behavioural reactions accordingly.

By accessing the subconscious mind directly, and by using the specific suggestions, I can enable you to amend, notify, alter and change your behaviour, emotions and habits to suit your higher purpose.

How will hypnosis affect me?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind similar to the relaxed state prior to falling asleep or daydreaming. During hypnosis, the mind remains alert and in a state of concentrated awareness, whilst the body stays deeply relaxed. It's similar to being deeply engrossed in a film or book - where you become completely unaware of what's happening around you. Similarly, you may have driven somewhere familiar and upon arrival realise that your mind was focused elsewhere! Hypnosis is a similar sensation. You concentrate on my voice and your own visualisations to the exclusion of everything else.

The hypnotic state allows you to explore painful thoughts, feelings, and memories that you may have hidden from you conscious mind. The subconscious mind is also more receptive to beneficial therapeutic suggestions. By altering unconscious thoughts and ideas you can easily and immediately make changes in your conscious actions and overcome many unwanted patterns of behaviour.

During the session you are conscious and remain in control of your faculties at all times. You will never do anything under hypnosis that you would be unwilling to do otherwise! And you can’t get stuck in Hypnosis!

Can anyone have hypnotherapy?

Most people can be hypnotised if they are willing to allow their mind and body to relax. During hypnotherapy we work in partnership to resolve your issues, and you have to take responsibility for this too. You need to be at a point in your life that you are ready to make the changes, and you have to be emotionally ready to explore the root cause of an issue. If you would like to discuss this in more detail please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Hypnotherapy is not advisable if you have suffered a very recent bereavement, or have experienced a major trauma in the last six months.

You should consult your General Practitioner if you have been diagnosed with epilepsy, or have a serious mental health problem such as manic depression, schizophrenia, reactive depression or personality disorder.
